Oh yeah, we value education. Sure we do.

I’ve been accepted to UNR for the fall semester as a “Graduate Special” student. As a consequence, I’m on the Grad Student distribution list. This came today:

Subject: Dissertation abroad program cancellation

The Department of Education issued a formal cancellation notice for several of its international program competitions; of particular interest to the graduate education community is the withdrawal of the FY 11 Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad solicitation.  The notice reads, “The Department has determined that, as a result of final Congressional action on FY 2011 appropriations, there are not sufficient funds available in 2011 to support new awards under these programs. As such, the Department withdraws these notices inviting applications for new awards for FY 2011.”  The announcement is available at:  gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2011-06-14/html/  .

But we sure as hell don’t mind paying top dollar to send young men and women abroad to Afghanistan or Iraq.

Speaking of budget cuts, Sweetie will be finding out soon how much the school district employees (those that are left) are going to have to take it in the shorts. More on that later.

  1. WCSD doesn’t respect teachers, so I don’t expect it to respect classified or other professional staff.

Take it from one who knows the place and how dirty it is.

  2. Sorry to hear that, I agree that the U.S. has its priorities backwards. Billions and billions are spent on wars that should have never started and they’re wondering where all the money has gone to fund education. Nice one America.

  3. It ain’t just Nevada. The award-winning community college that I worked at for years is cutting popular programs like the only affordable (and the best quality) film making and video production program. There’s been a waiting list for the program since it started 25 years ago.
